Looking at a 1990 Chaparral 2000 SL w/ 405 V8. Everything seems great and garage kept however unlike others I have looked at this one seems to have white corrosion on stern? What is this and should I be concerned?

Re: Corrosion on stern?

I HIGHLY doubt it's been garage kept it's whole life. That is fairly typical corrosion for a drive that has been left in the water for periods of time. The stainless steel prop also has some residue on it, and that is from it sitting in the water.

That corrosion is mostly cosmetic, but I would remove the prop and really check the rear bearing carrier closely. And everything else. The owner is not telling the whole truth about how the boat has been stored, so I wouldn't trust him on anything at this point.

I went back and read it and he says its been garage kept all but one year where it sat at the lake. I guess that tells all. So, how worried should I be about future problems due to that and what the pics tell?

don't be worried at all..... just check it out while you are in there putting in new bellows and impeller..... lube all the grease fittings including the u joints and run it.... the corrosion is way less important than the 20 year old rubber parts

Re: Corrosion on stern?

Make sure that it has the correct anodes on it.

If it is in salt or brackish water with the ss prop use aluminum anode.

If it is in fresh water use magnesium anodes.

The corrosion looks like it's from salt water, just needs some TLC.

Re: Corrosion on stern?

My '89 outboard had similar corrosion and has never seen salt water. It simply comes from aluminum sitting in water and then out of water. Because the paint had flaked off or was chipped and was not repaired at the time, surface corrosion was allowed to form. Sanding down, priming and repainting will keep it like new.

Thats nothing compared to some of the stuff we see here :D...follow the advice given in the above posts...engines are far easier to repair / replace than structural defects...check those out very carefully...good luck bro
