I'm helping out a friend who has a problem with the control solenoids on his aftermarket trim and Tilt, (CMC). When I worked on this the first time I found the solenoid block, solenoids and wiring laying in the bilge area. I advised him that electricity and saltwater don't mix. I then cleaned the male and female parts of the assembly with emory cloth. Kinda hard to get into the socket areas. As a stop-gap we put the assembly under the cover on the battery. (All this is done swinging on the davits as he did not get a trailer/wasn't going to need one!!) The next fix was done after borrowing and refitting an old trailer. This time I recleaned all contact areas and placed the assembly in a pvc enclosure on the transom. Six months later it's screwed again!!

Is there a product that I can chemically clean these contacts and sockets with? I have used various products to retard or eliminate corrosion, does anyone have a great suggestion after I get it cleaned again.

All work compounded by boat being used only seldomly and my friends impatience with taking the time to properly repair. Any and all suggestions appreciated :) :)

Re: Corrosion Removal

If you want to clean them very quickly I have used a mild solution of Kettle cleaner. I believe it contains fomic or Citric acid, ( The stuff you can buy to remove limescale off kettle elements.)A few minutes soak should see all deposits bubble off the male and female connections. It is important that you wash the acid off completely afterwards or it will eat away at the copper / brass until all gone. I have then used a silicone based grease when reassembling to keep the water off. This is probably not a reccommended solution so be careful.
