For Australian based boaters, I was told a fair while ago that petrol brought for use in boating was tax free, or tax reduced.

Has anyone any information on this?
John, someone has a good grip on your leg and giving it a big tug.

All petrol in Aus is taxed at a rate of approx. 300% (currently, wholesale price is about 47cents per litre, the rest is tax and duties). Businesses can claim back a 10% refund (GST). Queensland gov gives a 10% rebate at the pump - only queensland.

The rest of us suckers pay full fare. No ifs or buts.

Tax and duties are applied as a percentage of the wholesale price, the higher the cost, the more tax we pay. That means that for boating, we actually pay MORE because marinas are often 20 or 30 cents dearer than land based pumps.

AldoOriginally posted by John McFarlane:
For Australian based boaters, I was told a fair while ago that petrol brought for use in boating was tax free, or tax reduced.

Has anyone any information on this?
