Cost of petrol for boating in Aus

For Australian based boaters, I was told a fair while ago that petrol brought for use in boating was tax free, or tax reduced.<br /><br />Has anyone any information on this?

J MC, if it's anything like in the USA, what is subtracted in taxes for the non road use of petrol is more than made up for by the profit margin requirement of running a marina.

John, someone has a good grip on your leg and giving it a big tug.<br /><br />All petrol in Aus is taxed at a rate of approx. 300% (currently, wholesale price is about 47cents per litre, the rest is tax and duties). Businesses can claim back a 10% refund (GST). Queensland gov gives a 10% rebate at the pump - only queensland.<br /><br />The rest of us suckers pay full fare. No ifs or buts.<br /><br />Tax and duties are applied as a percentage of the wholesale price, the higher the cost, the more tax we pay. That means that for boating, we actually pay MORE because marinas are often 20 or 30 cents dearer than land based pumps.<br /><br />Aldo

Damn, thats a lot of taxes! No wonder your politicians took all your guns a few years back, protecting themselves from the people. Do you get anything for the money besides a lot of people on the government payroll? Why do they measure by the litre? Believe its a bit more than a quart, 4 quarts to a gallon. Small unit of measure when you are dealing with gasoline, quite acceptable when ordering BEER. Do they tax beer the same way? Grounds for a revolution? regards fred

Fred<br />They measure by the litre, because thats what the rest of the world uses. The metric(SI) system!

here is sunny brisbane queensland currently running at 1.35 cents per litre at my marina or multiply by 3.78 to get us gallons = 5.103 dollars a gallon eek<br /><br />Ewen
