also what would it take to upgrade this motor when i rebuild it to get more power out of it? do they make high performance reeds and can it be bored out with high compression pistons? what else can i do to get the most out of this motor?

Bunch of sourpusses. Without getting into troubleshooting your actual problem and replacing whatever it is that needs replacing you'd be looking at ...

$200 or considerably less for a new 16 amp stator depending on if your google foo is strong
$100 each for power packs (2)
$150 for carb rebuild kits. Add $200 for a set of 200 carbs to replace those puny 150's.
A $15 base gasket so when you pull the powerhead to lop a foot off the tuner, it won't leak when it goes back together
$55 to get your heads milled to get your compression up to 140 lbs. $50 for head gaskets.

Thats less than $850 for better reliability and probably about 25 HP.

Is your motor worth more than that? Yes. Can you buy a perfect motor for less ? No.
