I currently have a 22' boat that I trailer. I am wondering what costs above and beyond slip fees will be. I am checking on Haul fees storage etc. How much more should I figure for maintenance? I currently do my own but don't know if I'll be able to with a larger boat. I have not slipped a boat before what am I missing? Besides the boat? I am in Maine.

Thanks
Bruce

I don't know how much larger you are going with. Here are some that come to mind:

1. Additional cost of dock side fuel
2. Wagon - To get supplies from parking to boat
3. Refrigerator - Nice to have sitting there
4. Any slip storage lockers & locks
5. DirectTV for the slip and boat - You may be able to split the cost with neighbor
6. Does the dock give you so much electricity and then above the limit they charge?
7. Some insurance companies will increase rates
8. Grey water pump out fees
9. Fresh water fees - Marinas around here use well water for the slip and the water station has city water which is much better for the water system.
10. Maintenance could go up if the Marina doesn't have on-site service.

If your figuring on leaving it in the water theres alot of extra expenses...bottom painting...extra insurance...more slip fee's...canvas for windows/salon ect,to keep the interior from becoming an oven...monthly topside maintenance...if shes twin motors..double motor tuneups, double filters...extra fenders/dock line...alot more fuel..higher tax's.ect.....

Depends a lot on where you live...

I pay $2600 a yr for the slip. $300 for each haul out/launch. I paint the bottom myself- $300. Probably $500 in engine maintenance done myself. 225 gal tank, $4.81 a gal, cruise burns 19-20 gal per hr... you do the math.

Thanks guys
It is the items like electricity etc. that I had not thought of. With the economy the way it is I might be in position to pick up a decent 32-36' boat this fall cheap so I am considering as many of the extras as I can while pondering this. And as I said I have not "slipped" a boat before so I am kinda in the dark. I will have a larger boat at some point I was just thinking I might be able to pick up an older used one cheap to gain experience with the boat, slippage, etc.

To add to my list....

Fuel is obviously more expensive on the water. Like I said, $4.81 here right now. Pump out is $5, some places it's free. No charge for electricity and cable, comes with the slip. They do charge more for live aboards, but I can spend a few days on the boat at the marina and it wouldn't be a problem.

As you can see, most of these are little. But trust me, once you slip a boat, you'll never go back. I come back from a long day on the water, pull in and tie up and just relax. We have a cool little Tiki bar, so I grab a beer and hang on the boat, listening to music, talking with my "neighbors", etc. Rather be hauling the boat and driving it home? No way.

Re: costs assoiciated with a larger boat

Bruce,

I keep my 23 slipped on the Saco River, just down the road from you. Rates there are lower than Portland area and it runs around $2,600.00 from May 1st to October 15th. Shore power is another $260.00 for the season. I have an I/O and maintenance and up keep runs around $1500.00 a year, but I replace anything that even looks like it may go bad each season. I have my own trailer so I don't incurr storage or hauling fees but I have others tell me it is around $250.00 to haul and the same to launch, with average storage fees on a marina lot running between $500.00-$1500.00 depending on where you leave it. A 32' boat is going to cost you over $1,000.00 each way.

I trailered for years and will never go back. Outside of the seasonal launch and haul, you will never have to wait in line with a storm knocking at your stern and ten other boats jockying for position. You will probably use it more given you don't have to trailer it every time you want to use it and you will make some great freinds at the marina. When it is a little rough to go out, you can have a great time right at the dock, complete with Barbequing and your favorite beverage. On a 22' you will have ample room to relax.

The gas at the marina may cost a little more but I feel it is worth it. The other expenses you incur will be about the same whether you tow or slip with the exception of bottom paint which I highly recommend. New EPA rules have amost doubled the price the boat yards charge so you may want to do that yourself. It can range from $25.00 to $50.00 per linear foot.

Over all I highly recommend slipping it.
