Hi all,

I have a regal 2760 with 2 mercruiser 4.3 V6 efi engines with balance shaft and vortex heads. driving through alpha 1 gen 2 drives.

I had a problem that caused water to enter my cylinders. I changed out exhaust manifolds it made one trip and then eventually ended up with water in the oil. I removed and pressure checked heads and intake and reconditioned and reinstalled both. engine seemed to work well with no water in the wrong place. on the trailer running on muffs.
just to save some cost since there would have been some water in the crank case, or so i thought, I decided to use some cheap 50weight oil. to initally flush through the engine. (50 body is the common cheap oil here as its very hot all year round. ) also since i did not really find a fault, if problem still existed.
when it was time for the test run, we forgot the oil change pump home so we decided to make the one run with the cheap oil.
boat ran well for about 25mins then it seemed to be holding back, loosing power, as i noticed this i pulled back to check, overheat alarm came on and i switched off. belt had come off. went back to marina on one engine replaced belt however engine seemed to have a knocking sound that i dont remember hearing before. starting it a few days later it seems to have developed a squeak sort of like a bearing intermittently sticking then rolling.
it sounds like the back part of the engine, nearer the port side. I was thinking gimbal bearing, however sounding with a screwdriver as the stethoscope, there is no sign of it from the outside. and there seems to be a sound that could be a bearing that has some wear but definitely not the squeak. I am thinking this sound is the gimbal bearing.
I was wondering if the 50body oil could have caused a total oil starvation in some area, or if anyone had any idea of what i could check before i remove the out drive. or other things that may cause this.
my plan is to change the oil let it run for a while if nothing changes remove the outdrive to isolate.
if outdrive good remove and throw away engine. i have had enough with it.

No Fuss :)

now i constantly monitored the oil pressure, and as the engine would normally run, I have just under 40psi at idle and around 80 when i increase the rpm.
with the rocker cover off, i see oil trickling out of the rocker as it comes up through the pushrods. If i increase the rpm more oil comes out. indicating to me that the oil is circulating through the engine. is there any area where the oil passage is really so fine that the 50body would not pass.
also would a spun bearing produce a squeaking sound.

@bigskiohio - dont let anyone hear u saying shark sandwich
its Bake and Shark :) as a tourist u could get away with saying shark and bake, some how tourist tend to say it that way. but NEVER shark sandwich

No Fuss :D

I doubt seriously that 50 weight oil did any harm. I think maybe it was the overheating or maybe something else. Had a squeeking circulating pump before though,

In hot weather 50 weight did no harm. Maybe if you tried to start in in 0deg. weather yes, starve the engine of oil, but not in a warm climate.

The 50 weight oil didn't do any harm to your engine. Most likely the engine was damaged when the fan belt came off and it overheated. The 50W probably actually helped cause less damage under the overheat conditions!

weather for T&T says a low of 74 deg F overnight....

I think 50wt would be fine in that temp. But one 60 degree night and I wouldn't want it in there.

The belt came off for a reason. Your pump is probably shot.

been running 20w50 oil for years, works great, and its not that hot up here,85 f max and that is exceptional out on the water. probably the belt coming off did the damage
