Could be very bad idea?

Am doing fuel testing to check for leaks in the line. Just hooked up the clear vinyl hose then stopped. I put it between the fuel pump and the carburetor. Is that a bad idea? Is the pump going to produce enough pressure that I should worry about the limited PSI rating of the vinyl hose? I could put it on the suction side, between the pump and tank but its a bit more work..

Still needs to be rated for fuel, and needs to be approved by the coast guard for marine environment.

Go ahead and use the clear for your testing, but replace it with marine certified fuel line before you put it on the water.

LOL, when I was a kid my older brother had a starcraft? aluminum boat. He blew it up one day doing almost exactly the same thing. So funny. He had no eyebrows for a month.

definitely a fuel issue. There's a big air gap in the line and hardly any fuel comes out of the pump. The fuel pump diaphragm is pretty much new. Leak at the tank? Who knows..

So what is going on that your doing the tests? While your at it check the diaphram and check valves.
Do a compression test just for fun.J

The fuel pump only produces 2-5 PSI pressure. The real issue is that gasoline dissolves some types of clear hose. Then you will get chips and chunks in your carb needles and run lean.

Instead of clear hose, why don't you put a clear plastic filter between the pump and carbs?--I always recommend one anyway. Keeps chips of the diaphragm and valves out of the carbs.

Surging in the midrange. The motor will run fine at WOT or at low speeds. Surges, sputters, and smokes like crazy anywhere in the middle. No idea what it is. Is there something that could make the motor run rich at midrange?

Compression test was solid, a little over 140 for both cylinders.

Carbs are clean and freshly rebuilt.

Diaphragm looks new since I replaced that not so long ago, valves are all opening and closing back up.

Reed valves are not stuck and are flat.

Am getting spark to each cylinder.

What the heck could it be?

It's already running off a portable tank. The contact point between the nozzle that the fuel fitting goes into and the tank seems to be loose though, unlike the nozzles of the new tanks I see. Air leak there? Replace it? I am tired of throwing money at random parts hoping it'll fix things though..

It would be nice to know what engine it is: 35, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65? Single carb or twin carbs? Ignition type ie. magneto, battery and coils, Magnapower II?
