I have a Johnson Outboard 25 horsepower motor model # J25elese and serial # Ros537444
The starter motor free spins and doesnt jump up into flywheel. Could this be a solonoid problem? Also anyone who knows how to tell me what year this is, I would greatly appreciate it.

one of two things usually cause:
(1) starter drive could be corroded or need lubrication
(2) starter is not producing the necessary speed and torque to engage the drive.

If it is spinning, at good/fast rate, the solenoid is working.

Re: Could I be having soloniod problems?

maybe i read your posting wrong  , does it spin freely by itself when you turn the key but not jump up and engage the flywheel? Or does it just spin free with your fingers but not do anything when you turn the key? My answer relates to the first scenario .. Good luck
