The other day I took my brother-n-law's boat out on the lake. I have been working on repairing another boat and was happy to get to get back on the lake in a working boat. Well, I got out about 2-3 miles for the dock and started fishing. All was good until I tried to move locations. The motor would not crank, no matter what I did. So then I decided to use the trolling motor. Which would have worked except I guess the blade was too old and brittle, so when I went to put it in the water and it hit the boat one of the two blades broke off. I tried to paddle back in but needless to say 2 miles into the wind, was not working. So my only option was to use the ONE BLADED trolling motor. Well after 2hrs of cavatating slowly I made it back to the dock. But did it stop there, NO! I went to put the boat back on the trailer. I back the trailer down and walked the trailer to get the rope and pull the trailer, well I slipped and stepped on one of the runners, which of course, broke. So I got back on the trailer and tied up the boat. I pulled out of the water and noticed that the boat was not centered on the trailer so I put it back in the water and straightened it up. So then I walked back up the boat and trailer to get back in the truck to pull out and heard an odd sound. I pulled the truck out and went to pull the plugs so the water would drain and noticed that the tongue tube was rusted on 3 of the 4 sided and buckled. The bottom was the only side holding it together. Needless to say I drove about 20mph to get home, hoping that it didn't break all the way through. Got home and had to use a jack lift to raise the trailer to get it off the truck. SO I WENT AND HAD A HAMBURGER WITH MY BEERS!!!! :)

I feel for you jailermac, been there, done that, took my boat out and hit a stump, broke the shear pin, no spare of course, lowered trolloing motor, had to run it on high because of 25 mph wind, hit another stump and sheared all blades off prop. No spare and no paddles. Used anchor throw and retrieve method to make it back to shore and then pulled boat through shallows back to ramp(swimming through deep spots with the rope in my teeth).Back at ramp backed trailer in too far fell off end of ramp. No problem ,the mighty dodge can pull it out. It sure did and took the axle hanger off when it did. Luckily, old gentleman at ramp had some bolts and finally made it home.( with no fishing accomplished)

Re: Could it get worse?

Jailermac and ddaigle, I have had several days where it was one disaster after another. Luckily, I cannot remember most of them (a self-protection feature). Also, luckily I think I have learned something from each (more than not to be so stupid again). For example, if you spray ether into a cranking engine, it will definately catch on fire (it also may start).

Another example, if your boat fills up with water(after you forget the plug), the flotation foam in the floor will cause the boat to try to capsize.

Also, if the ocean is rough, the water in the (Sterndrive)bilge may slosh violently enough to get on the coil and kill the ignition.

I am also never amazed at human nature. Some years ago, my wife and 3 of her girlfriends (four nice babes) put on their bikinis and took off in my speedboat. Of course three hours later, they ran out of fuel. The interesting thing is that they could not get anyone to assist them. They ended up walking to a phone to call me. If I had come upon a situation like that(in my single days), I would have been quick to tow them some place, given them drinks etc.
