Could the key switch be bad?

On a Merc XR2 150, last week I was out and the motor would not shut off using the key. I had to choke it to make it quit. After a while it was ok, but was harder to start.

This week I was out and the motor died on me while in gear at idle speed.

"I have another thread also pertaining to this same issue".

Well, a good friend of mine suggested that a bad key switch could also be a cause of this issue. I did not know that a bad key switch would cause the motor to crank, but not start??? Could the small issue that happened to me last week with me not being able to turn the motor off with the key been a sign of a bad key switch?

Both times this has happened it has been difficult to start, " the motor would crank and crank all day long......just would not fire", and after sitting there for a while I can hit the key and it fires just fine.

I am really concerned and dont want to go and spend alot of money when there is the possibility of being something simple.

I have already went through and checked the fuel filter and added some "sea foam"----is what another reader advised me to do---".

Can a bad key switch cause the motor to crank, but not fire?

Re: Could the key switch be bad?

Your switch is a ground of switch and it sounds like the contacts or bad in the switch. Go to the switch boxes and disconnect the black/yellow wire it'd the kill wire use a ohm meter to it and ground and see if it'd working properly.

OK, I will do that, probably be tomorrow cuz I have to borrow an ohm meter. So you are saying that "yes", a bad key switch can cause the motor not to fire......???

I took the key switch out and shook it some, and water did come out of it.

:(
