Actually the motors all turn the same direction but the lower units are configured for CW and CCW. If the lower has been changed, you'll need to find out the direction it turns in FWD before proppin'.
Good luck
PS Since the model number denotes a 1988 motor, good chance the lower has been swapped.

There were some OMC loopers that the powerhead did turn backwards. Obviously yours isnt one of them. The rotation is changed in the lower unit. Someone may have put a std rotation gearcase on it.

The counter gearcases have a small cr or r stamped on the end of the propshaft.

Lets see...it was in the mid 80's. The 1985-87 V8's had a backwards motor and the V6 loopers in 86 & 87. The parts that made them run backwards (and the water pump) are really hard to find anymore. Strange motors.

You need to identify which lower unit you have.

Running even a short while on the wrong "direction" lower unit will destroy it... in short order. $$$$$

hehe yea I am pretty sure its running the right way! I have put 50hr or so on the motor. I have tryed sevaral props and never got a CR one so the lower must not be original, I will search the forum to find out how to ID it year/model so if I need parts I will know what it is. Maybe thats why the shift interupt switch is not wired to anything! did the older units not have one?

They all (V6 loopers) had shift interrupters but if its set up right, you dont need one. Just go by the model number for the year, 1988. Then just keep in mind you have a standard lower. That'll be the only difference. Those motors were basically the same from 1988 to 1992 -- a big bore (3.0 liter) open deck 90 degree looper.

Thanks Dhadley for the info. Sounds like OMC hired the "New Coke" guy to come up with that one!!

Re: Counter Rotating? J200CXCC

In a Merc lower, the "forward" gear and heavy bearing is in the front nose of the housing. In a counter left Merc the Forward gear and heavy bearing is in the rear.If the OMC is the same wayand you have it backwards, the light bearing can't take the thrust and wipes out,saw one come in shop.I bought a ebay new lower in crate in primer and agonized if it was counter or not,The left hand carrier is shaped differentI believe, nothing stamped on shaft end, thanks for info on the "cr" or "r" stamp.Merc uses an "L"!
