Can couter-rotating outboards be used in place of a regular rotating outboard?

If they can, do I just reverse the Controls?

My 1995 Mercury 2.5 Litre XRi EFI 175 Hp recently hydro-locked. There was water in each of the cylinders. I'm faced with either getting a new power head or a different outboard.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Re: Counter Rotating Outboards

Tom, You can use a counter-rotating outboard in place of a standard one, just install a left hand prop. If you switch the controls, you will be running full throttle using the reverse gear, which it may not be made for.

Are you sure the lower unit on the outboard doesn't provide the counter rotating part? That is how they do it on MerCruisers. On Inboards, the actual motor spins the other way.

Thanks Chris:

I was told by the person selling the motor that all I would have to do is reverse the controls. If you've right, I wouldn't have to reverse the thottle cables. I'd better do more research before I purchase it.

You can use a counterrotating outboard as either. You can't use a standard as a counter.

Re: Counter Rotating Outboards

HI

I just signed up and i see this counter rotating discussion is quite old, I need some help in this area please.

I have a 135hp optimax CR but have just fitted a new control/throttle box
and the forward and reverse are mixed up

1) do I change the control box (how dificult is this excercise)
or
2) can I simply fit a standard propeller and get on the water ( will running a standard prop damage my gear box
thanks

cheers

Welcome to iboats 75sd.
You best bet would be to start a new thread with your question. after a couple of replies, your question will be lost as many don't read all the replies, only the first post.

You will need to make the change in the control box, not by prop change. The lower unit gears and bearings must be designed for Counter rotation thrust.
