Just purchased a 24' star craft with twin 135 Mercs (not counter rotated) is it necessary to counter rotate, or can I get away with it like it is? Been told trim tabs work.(?)

Re: Counter Rotation

How does it handle? Does it torque up on one side when you turn a certain direction? If not ... you may be OK. Heavier boats do OK also.....

have not run boat yet have a warning signal problem, but if it does pull do you know if trim tabs work, is the pull even manageable or is it too dangerous?

Re: Counter Rotation

I have seen quite a few boats with twins in the standard rotation format. Both engines rotate the same way. On boats with a lot of deadrise (Deep V) say about 20 degrees or more, they will tend to roll up on their side when turning a certain direction. Heavier boats also tend to be less affected by same rotation motors. Also outboards of today ALL run the same direction, it is the lower units that are coutered, unlike the old days of making the motor run backwards, to offset the torque. I would fix your alarm problem and go run her out and see how she rides....

Trim tabs will certainly make life easier, not saying you can't do without them, but they sure are nice. Have run both twin standard and twin counter rotates, used trim tabs with both set ups. They will correct all that you may run across.

Re: Counter Rotation

My 23' Trophy HAD twin 120s on it. Man what a pain to steer. Even with tabs it stunk. When the steering cable was trashed, I installed the Sea Star hydraulic steering system. Still hard to turn but much better and NO kick back. Just set the wheel and let go. Made long runs much better by not having to hang onto the wheel. Yes, the torque tabs were set also.
