I posted yesterday about the stiff shifting on the 97 omc 454 king cobra. I understand that it is a fuzzy situation with alot of possibilties. My question is can I just live with it and continue driving it or can it damage the drive? Also I beleive the flywheel has a bad spot, because when I had feul pump problems and had to crank it quite a bit, it would occasionaly bang so hard it would shake the whole boat. Not so much now, Just an occasional whirrrrrr when starting. Can I turn a blind eye to this also and possibly run for years?

Re: Couple O ????'s

What do you mean to check the year?

Well there may be a "97" model (and a 98 too)

go to http://epc.brp.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Default.aspx (you don't have to put an email address in there.

select stern drive and press go. it actually indicates a 98 model. (although it may actually be an earlier model)

Oh, and by the way.....if you "turn a blind eye" to the shifting problem it'll cost you!!

Cheers,

I'm certainly no OMC expert, but isn't that the period of time the Volvo took over and kept the King Cobra name?

Ayuh,....

Whatever it is,...

Turning a Blind Eye to Any of the problems you mention will just get exponentially More Expensive to repair at a later date, after the problem involves much More of the driveline.....

I'm not sure of the next step to determine the problem with the shifter, and I know some people drive cars for years with bad spots on flywheels.

I don't know what shifting problem you have, did anyone give you stuarts adjustment?

Fly wheel ain't no picnic. Gotta pull the motor to get to it. You sure you ain't got a starter problem.

Maybe you can write in each post what the problems you have, i ain't hunting around for another post.

The shifter is stiff leaving nuetral going either to forward or reverse, I don't know how much pull is required, but it makes it hard to accelerate smoothly. I removed and inspected shifter lever, disconnected both cables, it worked smoothly. It also works smoothly with the drive disengaged for throttle only. Lube level is fine in out drive. The main problem I see with pulling the motor to replace flywheel would be not have alighnment tool upon replacement.

is the shifting tough going INTO gear, or tough coming OUT of gear, or both?
What are your idle rpms when your in neutral?

It is stiffer going into gear than going back to neutral, but neutral is hard to find, I have to wiggle lever to stop prop from pulling. Idle seems to be normal around 650 or 700 best I recall. Motor runs good ( idle or otherwise.)
