First, thanks for all the insight that is accumulated here - just did a minor overhaul and I have never even attempted much more than a plug change (manual helped too, but a ton of great info here). Dont know alot about this motor, just kinda fell into my lap.

It is an Evinrude 18hp 1959 model 15028.

1) I dont know where the "pee stream" is on this motor, I have it set up in a trash can and the water is about 3" above the cavitation plate - is that enough? I ask because I dont see any water flow from the engine - only a bunch of turbulence where the intake looking thing is above the prop. I start her up just fine, but am afraid to do much more than that for fear of breaking something. It has a new thermostat by the way, impeller, etc changed.

2) When the throttle arm is cranked all the way up, the butterfly in the carb is supposed to be horizontal correct? I ask because it is barely even moving at wot. I have read about the synch and link - but it seems like the throttle arm is moving when it is supposed to - at the center of the mark.

Thanks!

Hi, Chris.

Your engine doesn't have a tell tale. Cooling water is discharged in and around the exhaust.

The "link 'n' synch" adjustment should solve your throttle plate position problem.

Be sure to use a 24:1 fuel mix.

Good luck. :)

in a tank/barrel how deep does it need to be - where should the water level be?

Re: Couple of 1959 Evinrude 18hp questions

I just want to elaborate on JB's comments a bit:
The water line should be all the way up to the water pump. The water pump is at the junction between the lower unit and the midsection, about 4" above the cavitation plate.
After the engine warms up and the thermostat opens water should discharge through the large hole on the back of the midsecion. Keep an eye on the head temperature while you wait for it to warm up. If its too hot to touch, then you're overheating.

I'm not sure I understand you correctly about the link and synch - do you mean to say that the throttle is not opening much, or that the outboard doesn't go fast?

The throttle valve barely opens...I havent had this on the water yet, so dunno about that. I would think it would be completely or just short of horizintal when wide open. This one moves maybe 1/8th (if horizontal is a whole).

Ok, that's not right at all.
The magneto plate underneath the flywheel (which the cam is mounted to) is turning when you advance the throttle right? And the carb throttle plate just begins to move when the throttle pickup rolls onto the mark on the cam right? As you continue to advance the throttle, the pickup should move to the end of the cam as it turns underneath it, and when it reaches the end and you continue to advance the throttle, the magneto plate will hit a stop but the throttle plate should continue to open another half. This is done by a linkage running from a point on the throttle tower (vertical shaft) to the cam follower.
Where is my story going wrong?

Re: Couple of 1959 Evinrude 18hp questions

Well, got a bigger trash can/barrel and the water is shooting out now - more like a spray than anything else, hope that is right - heck, I am just geeked that it works.

I think I need to do the adjustment as you detail it, I think when I initially checked it I used the pickup? instead of the actual piece on the carb. I pushed on the little lever while it was in the barrel and it had a ton more top end - I cant believe the guy before me actually used it like that. I will try the adjustment and post my results. There any tricks other than the alligator clip and wire?

Your water pump sounds fine now. When your running around at full throttle, it'll be more of a gush.
No tricks to setting the pickup I'm afraid. It's actually not that difficult - it only takes a few adjust-test cycles before you've got it spot on. If it was adjusted for the pickup and not the throttle shaft itself, it'll be way out.
It's amazing what some people will put up with, eh?

yeah...you should see all the smoke from the seafoam I put in it. This is the same guy that I bought my trailer from that had bearing buddies with no grease zerk on them - that got me thinkin that maybe I should check this engine out.

I gotta tell you, this is the most fun I have had in a long time. I really enjoy learning new stuff and have always been a tinkerer, these old engines are great for that. It is really nice to have a place where people are willing to share their experience. Thanks for the help.
