Couple of "dumb" maybe...questions.... Transom/Stringer

1. Why is it recommended that a layer of mat be between each layer of transom plywood? Strength?, void filling properties? Would "peanut butter" trowelled with a 1/2" notched trowel accomplish the same thing? How about the notched trowel thing for attaching the plywood core to the hull skin? Am i missing a structural beenfit here?

2. When replacing the transom do you cut back all 4 (or however many you have) stringers 18-24" to facilitate an easier install of the transom? I have 1 rotten stringer and 3 solid but the thought of trynig to sqeeze a 7' 1.5" plywood transom between the skin and the the stringers.......

3. if cutting the stringers (on a 45) do you need to scarf a piece of plywood to either side (PL premium) of the replacement stringer joint and then glass?

Thanks
Doug

1. The mat fills the void between whatever it is you're bonding together and reinforces the polyester resin. Polyester resin and/or putty can be fairly brittle when used without some type of fiber, so plain putty can crack when stressed. When using epoxy the mat isn't needed.

2. You can cut the stringers or notch the plywood for the transom around each stringer, but check the stringers a second or third time, you don't want to ever dig into it again.

3. You don't have to, but its a good idea to glue and screw and double up in that area.

ondarvr got it.

there is one more benefit of the glass between the layers of transom wood.....a layer of 1.5 csm between the wood is also a water barrier....if your transom does strat to go.....the inner layer will slow down (not stop) the rot process.
the reason we glass the new transom to the hull is for structural reasons....remember ....fiberglass can be as strong as steel.

one thing....when you have your new transom built.......practice putting it in several times before you add the wet glass and in stall it......practice of a quick installation keeps murphy away.

Oh so true, have everything laid out and ready, clamps, blocks for clamps. If you choose to run bolts thru the exisiting engine mounting holes as a clamping means be sure to grease or wax them well or they'll become a solid part of your new transom, (been there and done that, not fun)
