Couple of loose wire photos here...

There are two wires that go to nothing on my 1986 Mariner 150 outboard. One is a red wire with a white stripe; it has a rubber plug in the end of it like it might be disconnected from the factory.

The second wire is a tan wire that has a crimped on connector on it. It is running near the bottom of the outboard and I can't seem to find anything for it to go to.
Re: Couple of loose wire photos here...

I am looking at my 89 Merc manual wiring diagram, but hard to tell for sure. It looks as though the red/white comes off of the stator and connects to the outer switchbox. Obviously not need for your engine or it would not run.
The brown is probably for a temperature gauge. The wiring schematic shows the tan as going to "control box instr connector", what ever that is. Your wiring is showing the tan wire hooked onto a blk wire and into the wiring harness that goes to the dash. Obviously not needed for your set up.

What does the other switch box look like?

Re: Couple of loose wire photos here...

I actually haven't pulled the switchboxes as of yet. I just got this boat/motor in February. It runs pretty well; I think the idle could be smoother so that is why I am in the process of going through some checks right now. I have just done a spark gap test, and I am going to replace the plug wires first. The plug wires are old (maybe 1986 vintage) and the spark is weaker on a couple of cylinders.

Is there something visual I should notice on the switchboxes?

I was looking at the Seloc Manual and it doesn't seem to give reference to the loose wires in the pictures. I've rebuilt a couple of I/Os, and the only outboards I've had in the recent past have been 3 cyl 'rudes which are about as simple as a garden tractor. I'm still learning on this v-6 Merc. Help here is greatly appreciated.

Re: Couple of loose wire photos here...

I was just wondering if all the posts on the other switch box had wires connected to them. The red/white wire has me curious.

My 1995 125 merc has a tan wire with a white stripe with a male end bullet connector on it. It is also hanging loose and I search every where for where it goes. Every thing seems to run fine but it it does annoy me a little

MDOG

I just replaced the spark plug wires. I'll pull the switchbox and see if there are any missing connections there. I haven't checked the spark since the plug wire change. Thought I might get her wet here in a few.

Those tan wires are for Temperature switch for warning horn and temperature sender for gauge.

I suspect there was some rewiring done previously, still haven't figured out the red/white wire yet though.
