Help a newb please....

1st time boat owner, new used boat. test drove it it was fine. Took it out myself and found at 4500+/- RPM started to get 220* 240*. went to dock and didnt want to rev down. popped throttle and it stuck higher. farther inspection at home found water leaking from heads (drips) and water line indicates its been doing that. Also found gas dripping from bottom of bottom carb. Pulled bottom carb and floats were not stuck. Reinstalled carb still RPM stuck up about 2k. When I had boat out it would do 55mph, ran fine, also has a quicksilver prop with exhaust ports in it. Ideas?

I need 2 new head gaskets and maybe a few other parts. Im having a very hard time finding someone that sells parts. Best place to buy?

Serial number I found on engine A931060

yes crappy luck! Im hoping its simple stuff, but im not scared of a wrench...
18' 1986 winner, 150 black max, xr2, serial number A931060 (1985 engine from what I can find). Unsure what if anything has been done other than new carbs. (so he said, but they are very clean). Im not sure about the imprellar either. I was told previous owner 2 back rebuilt engine, I cant confirm that. there is white number written on head of one side. what other info would you like?

Re: couple questions from a rookie..

Check your throttle cable to be sure it's returning the throttle arm all the way to the stop.

Also, there's a clamp screw on the port side of each carb. It is to synchronize the carbs with each other, and with the cam that drives the carb linkage. If they weren't set right and/or came loose, you'd get all kinds of erratic behavior.

It would be worth your while to get the service manual and go through your engine maintenance stuff one time and set it up right. You might have foreign carbs on it with the wrong jets, etc. The parts look the same, but when you start mixing things up trying to make it run faster (not you, maybe a PO) you can easily do some major damage in time.

look at the 150 xr2 1987 )that was in production in 1986), starts off with and very close to mine a931060, nothing close to the 175.

HAd a friend stop by, checked a few things out. he seems to think its the inner switch box, gonna replace this and hope for the best.. I learned one box controls low end and other high end.

What you "learned" is so wrong. Each switchbox fires 3 cylinders. The stator has two tapped coils, one for each switchbox. One tap on the coils powers at low rpm, and the other at high rpm.

If you're made of money, just throw parts at it till you get sick of it, then pay a shop to set the timing and linkage, which is probably what's wrong with it.

If you're not made of money, then scrape together about 70 bucks and get the factory service manual for it. A few bucks more and you can do all the work yourself.

Ordered the manual. I think your on the right path with timing. Buddy called me today, spoke to a friend who ownes a marina. said his bet was the timing under flywheel. we are going to check it out tonight.

btw I have no money tree out back.. =-)

Next step is linkage and timing adjustment. Procedure's in the book. It reads a lot more intimidating than it really is.

Stators good, also visually inspected advance timing thing under fly wheel, no cracks looked fine, still starts up and heads to 2500-3000 rpms. Can't check thining cause I feel like too many rpms to let run n drive way. However if u push timing ARM forward to retard. Timing it will Idels down.

Also there is a round thing, under head, on the right side of the motor, that is Pissing out water when running.. it would be under the cowl if it was on. What is that thing?

You check timing while cranking without starting the engine. What you're communicating is that you don't have the factory manual and are either too cheap or too bullheaded to acquire it. In it are the adjustments for linkage that are obviously way off on your engine.

The water leak is the poppet valve. Shouldn't do that, needs a diaphragm and a coupla gaskets.

I'm done helping till you decide to do it right.

I think ull see I ordered a manual if u read a few posts above. I'm just impatient and want to narrow down to issue. Thank you for your help. Figured with the volume I might get to bottom of issue. Not sure why its a big deal if I have a manual. I mean if u have knowledge why not state. I've never had a boat, but wrenched on plenty of Toyota, don't write ups, helped folks fix trucks over internet, even driven to people with in va to help work on trucks. Again thanks for ur help, just looking to learn from others.

In ntinhri's defence I have a manual for mine and everyother place I looked said when timing, run in test tank or on the river. Only on here did I learn that you can jump the silinoid and time it without starting the motor. Come on j have a little patience, it's hard to wait on a manual if there is simple things you can do first.

Re: couple questions from a rookie..

In my defense.
1. You don't time a V6 running, you time it cranking. It ain't a lawn mower engine.
2. There are many variations of linkage progression on these V6's. The right one is in the manual for that engine. It ain't a lawn mower engine.
3. He got here by guessing instead of doing it right. That might work on a lawn mower engine, but not here.

He didn't get here by guessing he got here by his motor breaking or not running right.
If all of those things are true about the timing and linkage, why didn't you just say that?

Maybe i'm missing the point of the forum. I thought it was because sometimes people can't afford to bring it to the shop or even afford a $70 manual. So they come on here hoping it's something easy, and someone like yourself can say hey check this simple thing that no one knows about. Why don't we just see if we can shut this forum down? In it's place they can put

Check compression
Check spark
Clean carbs
If that fails get a manual

I value and trust your opinion when you give it, however alot of times your an ***!

Ntinhri sorry to jack your thread good luck!!! If j gives you some info take it. Change that poppet valve...:)

I'm done
