Hi everyone. I have read lots of great info on here and used a lot of it restoring my 79' Skeeter F-N-S that I just inherited. The motor is a 77' Rude 175 that seems to be pretty decent. Little info on the boat, I rewired entire boat, rebuilt trim motor, serviced LU, new impeller, new gas tank and lines, and cleaned carbs. I used the boat last weekend and did great, WOT was 5100 rpm and that might be low but I think its a prop problem (pitch). Took it out again this weekend and it acted up a little. I started off and it seemed to lack power, longer to plane and when it did was about 4000 rpm WOT, did not shake like it was missing just acted like you were 1/2 throttle for maybe 2mins then surge of power and did fine. Checked compression when I got it, all 6 cyl within 10psi of 120. Any ideas would be great. Also what kind of reputation does this engine have? I am new to boats so I don't really reliability of one brand over another.
Thanks Jamie

i had a similar problem. was told to put sea foam in my gas due to the newer gas has alot of moisture in it. after about 30 min of running...my problem went away..they say the blue stabil is also good for this problem....others may have better advice. but its worth a shot.

You are at least one prop pitch too tall for the rpm's you are running. You need to go down at least one prop size. That engine should run in the 5500 to 5600 range. When running at the 4000 rpm, the ignition may be dropping a cylinder. Check spark on all 6 plug wires with a spark checker, or with an inductive timing light. Keeping carbon off the rings on these crossflows is a good idea-an annual application of Engine Tuner (or seafoam) is a good idea.
