okay equip is merc 140 i/o when purchising I remember the previous owner started it put it in gear and I heard a loud squealing coming from the rear area suspect that would be the coupler since the prop would speratically turn a half rotation or so. Well while tinkering around in the garage with it I noticed I could turn the prop both ways while it was in reverse freely but while in forward I would have to apply aprox 20lbs of force and it would turn counter clockwise with a rubbing sound comming from the lower uint and when turned clockwise it was a very prominent ratchiting sound. So i did the shift cable adjustment like yall had mentioned in other threads but still having the same outcome. So I searched for more on here but unable to come up with any other ideas. Is it possible my shaft is just gone and need to replace the outdrive? Or have I made a mistake while adjusting somehow?

Also: when its in forward and I turn the prop counter clockwise I can feel the u joints turning but that is the only time that I can feel them move.

Ayuh,... or use paint marks,... chalk,...

If the drive is on the boat, how did you feel the u-joints move, by yourself,..??
How's the oil in the drive,..??
The rubbing in the lower should be the impeller...

Probably Easier to just pull the drive,+ Look around....
