coupler or alignment issue

So I have been working on this knocking from my bravo drive. Had it narrowed to coupler, ujoints, alignment or gimbal.

Ujoints and gimbal are new. The coupler aligns good then when I rotate the engine over 90-180 deg it is out. Is this an alignment problem or coupler?

Rubber in coupler is distorted. Is the splines at all worn?

That is a coupler problem, but I have never heard it cause a knocking noise. If this is an old coupler, and the drive was stored up for a long time, that does make them look bad. But after a while of being used it goes back to normal.
If the ujoints and gimbal bearings are ok, I would be more inclined to think chipped gear in the upper.
Have you tried a mechanics stethoscope to find where the sound is coming from?

used a steth and it is not coming from the upper. Steth makes me think it is coming from the transom or bellhousing/bellows area. I took the top off the upper and man it looks brand new. Also, i replaced all the o rings on the drive shaft and ran the engine for an hour. Then pulled it again and the oring nearest the yoke is beat up agian. \\

Sounds like the shaft is slamming in to the gimbal which is ruining the o rings.

It could be the coupler is failing. Since you have the new one, try it. Have never heard a coupler knock, also not saying it couldn't happen.

Don thanks for getting involved on this one. If it was a chipped gear wouldnt their be metal in the gear oil?

Re: coupler or alignment issue

everything you state crys bad coupler or bent shaft, or jacked ujoints allowing it to not rotate in alignment. get a straight edge on the shaft.

Not to hijack your thread. But do you have to remove the engine to remove the coupler?
