this may be a stupid question to you.. but whats up with that?

are the parts interchangeable??? or a hi performance trick?

is it the same company ?????.. i thought it would be like goin from a ford to a chev part

Same company, same engines-just different paint for the most part.

Gale, Johnson, Evinrude, since the early years were all built by Outboard Motor Corp. OMC, almost identical products. some had different add on features, but the features would usually work on all the OMC brands. in the 90's OMC, hit hard times, bankruptcy, Bombardier (in canada), bought OMC, and BRP was born.

Unlike OMC outdrives, their outboards are much better. Most parts are interchangeable. I would rather run a Johnson or Evinrude (Johnny-Rude) than Mercury. I think they are better outboards. Would not get one of those OMC Seadrives though, they fall into the same category as the OMC i/o's.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Johnson was purchased by OMC and were independent for a time but
eventually product lines were alligned using the same designs around 51.

OOPS!
Johnson and evinrude outboards from the 50's were notorious for falling apart after about 2 or 3 yrs of use on the old boats back in the day. They call them "johnrudes" or "johnnyrudes" to group them together as they were equally bad and otherwise untrustworthy. Almost everyone has one laying around in their garage because they hate to pollute the landfills with such particularly useless junk. I have a little space in the back corner of my garage that is enclosed so noone has to see the old johnson or evinrude "outboards". If you have any old johnson, evinrude, or gale (johnrudes) I would be willing to take them for a small fee for the aggravation of hiding them from public view. It is a very small fee and would be well worth your time to pay it just to get rid of those things.;)
Feel free to PM me if you would like to use my "service",

Well, what JBJ said, except I will hide them away FREE!

Something needs to be done about those unreliable things. They still clutter up the water world after 50-60 years.

If you have any 3HP JohnnyRudes that need to be gotten rid of I will even pay the shipping. :)

Way to increase market share?????? Good heavens, is that any different than Ford/Mercury/Lincoln, Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, or Dodge/Chrysler? Each manufacturer has the same engines in their entire line of cars these days, chassis are shared and only the body trim and accessory line up is different. And just so you know, I/O engines are currently Chevy and are used on virtually every I/O boat on the market.

The issues gets further confused what with various side deals between manufactures like Mercury and Yamaha who, for a while, seemed to be sharing power heads.

i agree with the analagy.....
but this is the first time ive ever investigated the differences between the names.....
when you buy a pontiac, even a kid knows that is a general motors base.
the manuf's make no bones about it...

with boats its a lot more subtile.....unless you hang here.
(im refering to the early seventies when we bought one)

i doubt that first time bob would "get it" unless a sales person told him.....

in the seventies i was upset cause we bought a johnston 70 instead of the 85 rude!!!! rudes wer far better motors from what i saw on the lake !!!!
i couldnt beleive they whent john....lots of discussions around the supper table about that descision.

i cant beleive we /the fam....were fooled. my step father was an experianced boater/fisherman...he must have known.......makes me feel stupid about the discussions.....

ill go hang my head in shame now.....

what does adam from mythbusters say....if i had any dignity.......:)

Re: courious...from an i/o guy

Don't worry too much oops, I've had customers tell me they would never own a Johnson because they are the most unreliable pieces of junk out there, but an Evinrude, that's a different story! Yeah right!!! and you couldn't tell them, they wouldn't believe you, and you'd lose a customer. So I just let them go on thinking what they wanted.

Nobody's mentioned the Merc/Mariner/Yamaha 'friendship' yet. Mariner started life in the mid 70's with the small engines as re-badged Yams and the big engines, 70hp+, were Mercs with a grey shirt and trousers on. In the mid 80's Merc bought Mariner and so all Mariners are Mercs. Late 90's Mariner put the black pants on and now the only difference between Merc and Mariner is the paint and decals used on the engine cowl. About the same time Merc cosied up to Yamaha and they cooperated on the 50hp 4 stroke. Merc did the short motor and Yam did the head and cam. They each put that on their own driveshaft housing. I've also heard, but not verified, that the early Merc V6 4 strokes engines were Yams too.

And for the record, if we're mentioning which engine we think is the best, for me it's black! Having service all brands I find the Merc so much easier to work on. They also seem to outlast the others and certainly kill the japs for corrosion protection. A close second is the Johnrudes.

Re: courious...from an i/o guy

Actually, up until GM went to the "corporate engine" philosphy, when you bought a Buick you indeed got a Buick designed and built engine. Same for Pontiac, Chevy, Olds and Caddy. In 1977 that all changed.
