Court Order – The US Currency Must Change, Again

OK, by now everyone knows the US Mint has been ordered by a federal judge to come up with a solution within 10-days on how to resolve the problem of blind people not being able to tell the difference between the denomination of the bills.

Good news: GW Bush has stepped in to solve the problem with the same impressive logic he has used to direct the war efforts in Iraq. He has ordered the bill for each unique denomination to be printed in a different color.

Hey, The Canucks can't imagine having paper money all the same colour. It does make it easier to distinguish one from anothjer with just a cursory glance.

Hey, you all would be amazed at all the things blind people have to go through. My daughter has been mugged multiple times, the theory is I guess that there is no way she can chase them down when they run, or identify them to the authorities.

She even got detained once in the Vancouver BC airport for decking some poor guy who grabbed her arm from behind trying to help her.

Thankfully, she uses plastic virtually everywhere with the advent of the debit card, but having to trust people is a major pain, especially when it would be reasonably easy to fix the problem, either with some sort of subtle embossing, or probably easier just making different demoninations a slightly different size. It would not take much difference to make it identifiable to a blind person while making it virtually indistinguishable to every one else.

PW2, wouldn't your daughter be better off using a credit card, over a debit card?

A padded total on a debit card is gone forever, like a check, whereas a credit card can be disputed.

Am I right on this?

I didn't realize that there was a widespread dilema with unassisted blind people spending paper bills and having to depend on the honesty and integrity of vendors to help them distinguish one from the other.How would they know if the shirt they just purchased was red or blue?Is there a plan to somehow mark all of the goods as well?

I believe if your debit card has a visa or mastercard logo it's exactly the same protection as with a CC.

Technology has come a long way in assisting blind people. It is not perfect.
Most people in reputable places are honest and helpful. It is not the biggest concern in her life, but generally she is in favor of anything that makes her less dependent on the "kindness of strangers"

The government could at least emboss a particular corner of paper money with brail (sp) signifying the bills denomiation. I'm sure this would be a large step forward to help the sight impaired/the blind with everyday affairs.

I remember years ago at the Brooklyn Navy Yard there was a blind vendor. When given a bill, he would ask what denomination it was. He was, in my experience, always told correctly.

Unfortunately, I don't think that would be the case today.

I may be overly cynical, but it seems to me honor and honesty in today's world is not as prevalent as it once was.
