Cover Snaps? What should I use?

Our boat has some plastic windows/canvas that you can pull down around the front porch. The canvas is screwed to the boat at the top with a snap on the screw so you can snap that little decorative piece around the top on. Typically the plastic is rolled up in the summer and stays behind the decorative canvas which makes a nice place for bats to hang out and also is hard on the plastic hanging in the sun all summer(not all of it fits behind the decorative canvas). Ive been wanting to make it so I can take the plastic/canvas down in the summer and put the decorative piece up. In the winter when the plastic is down the decorative piece doesnt need to be up. Ive been thinking about taking those screws out of the plastic windows then screwing it back into the boat and putting some female snaps on the plastic. In the fall when we put the windows back down its kinda shrunk over the summer so Ive got to pull really hard on it to get it down to the snaps. The main question I have, would those snaps around the top be strong enough to hold the top on? Around the front of the boat, the windows slant out, so I would be pulling down and out pretty hard to get the bottom snaps on. Dont have any pics of the front of the boat but I have a side shot.

Whats the best snaps to use and where do you get them?

Jeepster,

there are a couple of ways of doing what you're describing. I've had the type that Bondo is describing to hang the curtain from teh top and it works very well. I had my canvase replaced last year and they used a track system, with a long piece of stiff piping. the stiff piping runs along the top of the canvas and slides into a slot in the track. That works well too. i've also seen a system that affixes a piece of sunbrella to about 2 inches along the top with a zipper. There is a zipper at the top of the canvas that can be zipped up or down. That also works well. You may want to talk to a canvas guy about what you're looking to do.

Thank you very much, I've been looking for the 1867 model twist connector for 4 years. I had my front isinglass replaced a few years ago and they put a rubber gasket on the bottom which is too thick for the height of the studs. It's a bear to get the bottom connected to the windshield AND get the studs twisted to a locked position. Those will do nicely.

Snapped a picture showing the front in case someone didnt understand. The piece around the top snaps in at the same place the plastic is screwed in. So if I used those common sense snaps I would need to take the snaps out of the piece around the top and put those grommets in it also.

I am thinking the answer is............

The same number of snaps that are on the bottom will be required at the top.

In order to maintain the same taughtness.

Plus a few more to counteract the weight of the plastic.

Assuming you use the same size/style/type of snaps that are along the bottom edge.

1990 Stardust houseboat. Current models range between 75-100 ft. Not sure about the particulars of this one. They look like a high end condo inside. Absolutely beautiful.
