I am trying to do some cosmetic repairs to an old fiberglass V-hull. I would like to build a box with a cover in the back for the gas tank and battery. I know I will need to vent this, but I am not sure how. Can anyone get me started?

It is a 16 foot fiberglass boat with a 70hp engine. I plan on venting the cover, but I am sure it needs to be more advanced than just holes cut in it - that is what I need to know.

Inewell,we talking an outboard here?If so,you better build a seperate compartment for your gas tank or like mellowyellow says"BOOM".Built in tanks have separate vent hose outside of boats.Portables vent right off the tank.Your compartment will definately be full of gas fumes, and with any type of electrics close buy your in for a bad scenario. It can be done but plan it out wisely.

Does it help that the battery is in its own box, inside the big compartment?

Yes, it is an outboard motor.

No, the fumes will still get inside the battery box as it is not completely sealed. Re-locate your battery outside of the doghouse you are building and vent the enclosure properly. A bilge blower for an I/O works well.
