On my 96 Johnson 112 Spl there are 2 plates on both sides of the the housing attaching to my lower unit. They are held on with 4 bolts each. I would like to know what they are and should water be dripping from them when the engine is running. I have gone through my clymers manual front to back and cannot find a diagram specifying what they are.

No they are not hydrofoils. They are standard on the on the outboard. I see them on just about every motor. They are positioned on the left and right side above where the lower unit bolts on to the main. They are about 8-10" above antiventilation. It seems like they may be an access cover to the shaft?

I think you mean the lower engine mount brackets.

If water drips out there it must come from some of the drain holes in leg.

IF I AM FOLLOWING YOU RIGHT THE PLATES YOU ARE DESCRIBING ARE HOLDING IN THE LOWER MOTOR MOUNTS , AND YES IT IS NORMAL FOR WATER TO BE DRIPPING OUT OF THEM . IF YOU WANT TO SEE IF THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT TAKE ONE OFF AND SEE IF THERE IS A PIECE OF METAL WRAPPED AROUND A PIECE OF HARD RUBBER IF SO THEN THEY ARE THE MOTOR MOUNTS . THEY WILL ALSO HAVE A STUD COMING OUT THE FRONT SIDE OF THEM WITH A NUT ON THEM ..
