Re: cowl gasket

MANY people have used fuel line and cut it open with a razor blade. It makes a decent cowl gasket and if you compare the cost .....the fuel line is even more attractive.

Not knowing the type cowling gasket you need, I went through that same scenario myself trying to find one for my 1976 40HP Johnson engine. While mine was listed as "obsolete", I continued searching to only find one in Canada at twice the normal cost. But continuing on I found out that a newer model Johnson O/B used the exact same gasket material but it was longer for a larger engine but same profile. The price was less then half the Canadian price so I purchased the newer model gasket and cut about four inches off and it fit perfectly... Just an idea for you.

+1 for High Trim's suggestion. I went with nymarine for a cowl gasket for my 1963 motor. No issues.

This. I use a fuel line with a slice down its length on my '66 20hp and it works like a charm. It even keep the infamous white, wedding cake cowl from rattling around. Best of all it only cost about $5, or free if you have a bit of spare fuel line laying around.

Re: cowl gasket

on a small Merc 3.9 I used the split air (rubber) hose method ( air hose is cheaper than fuel line rubber)

After cleaning (degreasing) the rim with carb cleaner and a rag I glued the split tube using GOOP black adhesive. every 6 inches around the rim , installed the cover and let it dry up in place.

Cheap- works perfectly solid and quiet

The best part of using a hose split down the middle is no staples ;)

Re: cowl gasket

You can get it here for 20 bucks

Antique and Classic Outboard Motor Paint & Decals[/QU

That is the best place to get the exact colors for paint as well.
For you High Trim ,it very easy, because all you have to do is run up the 407 to his house, but for those south of the border, the stuff sometimes takes some time to get there. I have mine sent to Oakville and pick it up from there. I just ordered a new cowling gasket for my 1979 9.9.

Is this the fellow up in Ontario who advertises in the Outboarder? Can't seem to get the link to work (used to have his site bookmarked, but blew it away by mistake).

Listers: mystery name is Peter McDowell (Ontario), at the above website if accessible. He does a wide selection of antique colors, and seems to keep expanding. I'm sure he would give you a quote: peter@nymarine.ca .

The old link worked until a few days ago,but his wife shamed him into restructuring his website (his words, not mine ), he will be back online in a few days
