I picked up a 1/2 inch insulation blanket and decided to cut and adhere it to the cowl on my 85 hp force outboard.. I let it sit a few days for the adhesive to harden... Started the engine and was completely impressed at how much quieter it was.. 1 concern though, Is the only air inlet for the engine just on the top of the cowl near the handle lift area...

Re: cowl insulation

Nope! Up to 1994, the main air inlet was under the carbs

Yep I thought about doing to but started to like the sound of my motor . One time I thought I had throwed a rod and after limping home and sick gut feeling was pleased to find one bolt out of crankshaft housing . Best thing I did was to find where air was comming into motor and take a unibit and drill open a couple notches . water pump is still orignal only replaced thermostat with washer restrictor and can troll for aqbout 20-30 min before alarm came on I stop and rev in neutral till it goes off and started again . Frank's right look below carbs there is two 1/2" holes to breath so drill away and I wanted to insulate but aways worried about heat . Old boat for sale comming to craigslist soon restorable , antique ,classic boat,4 new tires , can't sink or not get home . good luck on fuel/motor prob . did both carbs on new boat this weekend and the 4.5hp was harder then mercruiser .Still have old bass/walleye boat motor with beacon light to shine your way and it has chyrsler emblem on it and if you could guess the hp I might give it away with the new 4 tires .
