I tried weather stripping a couple years ago, but you can see it didn't hold -- it's the yellowy/orangey dried stuff in the photos below.

I tried a little bit of 3M 3200 in a section. Seems like it'll do the job okay. But what do you boaters suggest?

Also, is this called a gasket or a seal or ___ ?

What about using an RTV type sealant like Form a gasket? They make a black silicon rubber form a gasket that once you cleaned up your seal, it would work nicely. Clean yours up so there is no other sealer on there and then apply the black form a gasket and tape it up to hold it against the cowl over night and that should hold nicely... Just make sure both surfaces are clean without any other glues or sealers are on either the rubber seal or the cowl where you are going to apply the black RTV. Oh, and you can get that black RTV as most any auto parts store... JMHO!

Bellows adhesive or 3M weather strip adhesive.

I use a metal strip of heavy tin and squeeze pinch clamps to repair the gaskets. Use the weather strip adhesive and sandwich the gasket between the hood and metal strip and clamp it till the adhesive is dry. C clamps can be used also. You need to clean the hood and gasket up and wipe them with alcohol or paint thinner for a good clean surface also. This has worked for me several times as it gets more contact area for the adhesive without lose air pockets to hold. JMO
