I have a coyote problem and it?s getting worse. The darn things have now killed two of my cats and are trying there best to get into the chicken pin. Most of the action is happening between 12am and 5am at night. I do see them in the daytime every now and then but it always seams it?s when I don?t have the gun with me. I have now decided its time to start actively hunting them. Three weeks ago I purchased an electronic caller that has cottontail, howls, pup, fawn, & jackrabbit recordings. I go out almost every morning before sun up and in the evening about 1-? hours before sun set. I have tried all the calls but the fawn but I mostly use the cottontail and use the howls as a locating call. I have had no luck with any of them. I?m hunting my 100-acre farm in middle Georgia and would like some advice for hunting them in this part of the world.

Thanks

Re: Coyote Hunting

Have you considered getting some large dogs to protect your livestock? Around here we have a coyote problem as well. Cats seem to be dissappearing here on a weekly basis.

We have a large german shepherd dog that is kept in our fenced yard and the coyotes always steer clear of us and our horses.

Might be a more permanent solution then hunting them. Just make sure you get big dogs as small dogs will end up being lunch just like the cats.

They are Wiley. Nuisance experts, trapping, and poisoning are popular methods up here!

We have them here now too. I have about an acre fenced in around the house.
My dogs go out to the edge of the woods and the smaller female dog gets freaked out at times.I think she smells them.
My 110 pound Boxer-Mastiff mix could probably give them a good fight.

There was a very large dead one on the side of the road just up from us the other morning.

I keep the 22-250 locked and loaded..

Re: Coyote Hunting

I do have three dogs two that are over 150 lbs. but they are indoor pets. Our friend up the road had his dog of about 100lbs torn up pretty good by them about a month ago. The coyotes have not bothered my two horses yet either. One of the horses is very aggressive in the pasture and chases everything out of it including the deer.

I haven?t given any thought to the trapping idea but that could be a good idea. I don?t know about the poison idea not sure if I like that one.

I recently read and interesting article in FUR-FISH & GAME that people have been using pumpkins to attract coyotes. Around here in VT ..... we use meat and even have coyote hunting contests. Form up a contest and go get them.

Re: Coyote Hunting

Place an ad in the local paper that says something such as ?Owner of 100 acres looking for an experienced coyote hunter as a hunting partner.? I am sure you will find someone with the skills you need to learn the fine points of coyote hunting. Not only is it nice to have a hunting partner but setting up with an extra pair of eyes and one calling and the other shooting can be a more efficient way to hunt.

Of course if you placed a similar ad looking for someone to trap them you would probably get rid of more coyotes but would miss the chance to learn a new sport and make a new hunting buddy.

Re: Coyote Hunting

i was going to say dog as well. my little boxer has scared a couple out of the yard. sounds like your's are not too scared of dogs though.

the best defense we have against them here is a group of hunters who go around and take every one they can. they have a pack of running dogs that they use.
try and find a group near you and let them know they can hunt your land. i would be specific about when and where though. they hunt like no normal people LOL they run 5 or 6 trucks up to 10 dogs multiple guys walking through the fields with rifles.
they do clean them out though.

Re: Coyote Hunting

yep.... they are getting bigger and more aggressive around these parts too. Our dogs have had a couple run ins with em in the last year.

I read an article in the Michigan Outdoors Mag. recently that was talking about michigan coyote populations in our area and how they are getting bigger and bigger. They stated how they used to average around 25-30 lbs. and now they average 35-40 lbs... and how their populations have more than doubled in the last 8 to 10 years.

Re: Coyote Hunting

I have read that coyotes have even taken a couple of calves and one cow from a farm down the road from me. Another couple said they were out for a walk around dusk and were being stalked by about 8.
When asked to put a bounty on them to cull the population, the local government's experts said they didn't think that was necessary as the numbers they had meant there was not a need.

Mean while, it's getting close to deer season and some of my friends who hunt, are traveling further west to have a better chance of success. Last year was awful. One camp with 9 hunters only got one doe, but came across lots of carcasses.

On our farm, we don't hunt them...too much work...We set snares in their runs in the fence.

Re: Coyote Hunting

Calling coyotes is sometimes tricky. I've had my best luck setting up in a higher part of a field edge and putting a deer tail on a stick to serve as a decoy, and use the cottentail call. Call for about a minute and a half, starting quiet then increasing the volume. Be ready for a quick shot they will slow down slighty as they approach the decoy as they do, let them have it. If no coyotes show, wait 15 minutes, call again. if none show, time to find a different spot and repeat.

I've shot most of my coyotes right at the crack of dawn.

If calling don't work, find some hog or steer guts and put them in the middle of a field and sit there and wait, they will show up.

I've also caught a lot of coyotes by putting a cat in a cage in a tree and put multiple #3 foothold traps on the ground around the cage. Space them far enough apart so you can catch more than just one coyote

Good luck

Re: Coyote Hunting

I help a farmer friend of mine upstate thin out his coyote population. Trapping does get rid of more if you know what to do. Hunting them usually makes them wise up pretty quickly to you. Whatever you do find some knowledgeable people from your area to learn from. You would be supprised at how smart they are and how one thing might work great here but 10 miles up the road it hardly works at all.

Re: Coyote Hunting

My neighbor up in Maine has a Coyote issue at his house in Bangor.
He has one heck of a solution for killing them too. An AR-15 with a night vision scope! He baits the corner of one of his clearings with scraps/guts from a local slaughter house. He has gotten a few, but usually the remaining members of the pack wise up after he shoots one, and won't see them again for a while.

My friend with a small farm outside Waynesboro, Ga says his donkey keeps the coyotes away. I hear a roadrunner can keep them busy too ;).

Re: Coyote Hunting

Hunting coyotes to control them, is very time consuming and there will always be more.

Invest in a nose-high electric fence, with a perimeter around where you don't want them.(yards may be tougher, so you may have to invest in new cats ;) ) Invest in the most powerful fence charger, you can afford.

I have a 5 wire high tensile fence, with 3 wires hot (top, middle, bottom), the lowest wire 6" high. The coyotes just keep on moving, to someone else's chicken coup. Keeps out racoons, dogs and opossums, too.

I prefer the coyotes to the rodents they kill.
