well i decided to go do some winter fishing and i of course had a crack in my lower unit from water freezing in it. it is a fairly small crack but there is oil leaking from it. Is this the type of thing where the whole lower unit has to be replaced? or is it possible this can be repaired? either way does any one know how much this will probably cost me? it is a 1989 175hp evinrude. thanks in advance.

Re: crack in lower unit

It's all going to depend on the size and location off the crack. I have an old motor now that I had a crack welded up with a fairly heavy bead of aluminum right on the outside of the crack and it's worked just fine. Maybe you could send us a photo of the crack so we can get a better idea of what you've got, then go from there.

I had a small, outbulge crack that leaked, and an aluminum-welding buddy drilled a couple dimples along the crack and filled in w/an aluminum bead. Works great. He said he drilled the dimples to give his bead something to grab on to..
I'd think it wouldn't cost much to repair. Replace is a different story.

Drilling each end of the crack will stop it spreading.

I had an old 9.5 Johnson with a really big crack and I used JB weld to fix it, never got any water in it and it last for 3 years until I sold the motor, as far as I know it is still fine.

Welding is your best option but the JB will also work.

Do you guys think i will be able to repair it with welding it or the jb weld even though it is leaking oil from the crack?

Yes.And if their is a blow molding machine shop in your area they have some really good aluminum welders.

Now if someone on here is familiar with your area they could possibly better help you.

If it were me I would take it to a fab shop or mold shop and get a quote. If it is a small crack it should'nt take long to prep and weld
