Just bought this boat...1986 Bayliner Capri 1400 with 50 HP Force engine

p.o stated it ran almost 2 years ago but needed a impeller.
i noticed these cracks after i got it home. Do you think ill need two new coils or could they still work and somehow be sealed up?

please help! thanks

Silicone them and look for new ones as the got hot enough to crack the plastic . It will keep moisture out and might last if the didn't short .

thanks for the response! Thats what i was thinking, ill try that and cross my fingers. lol
someone told me the coil may run about $135! i was shocked as it seems like a very standard coil.
im hoping they didnt crack from the engine overheating as this abviously could have coused other damage via powerhead.
Do you guys think this may be the cause??
im hoping not like i said haha

I had an older 50 hp Johnson.. with cracked coils.... it ran well until it was really nice and warm.... then it miss fired... let it cool and it ran well again .... not nice to limp around.... there is a lot of electricity shorting out of those coils.... Best advice is to forget the silicone and just replace them.... why run the risk of getting stuck on the water.... cost for towing is far more than getting a set of coils....

Re: Crack in my coil packs....? will this affect them working?

The answer is a total YES, they will be affected by cracking. Why? Because they will not be as insulated as when they are solid without cracks. The coating is twofold; it seals the windings from the elements and insulates the high voltage from arcing to engine ground. Otherwise they would make coils with open wirings... There are a lot of reasons why ignition coils crack. Age is one, heat is another and internal heat created by winding shorts is also a huge reason. For a neat trick, open your car hood one very dark night and see if you have any fireworks show. The least little hairline crack or cut in any high voltage wire will jump the break or compromised/weakened area to ground. It happens during the daylight hours as well but is harder to actually see. I’d do like others stated and silicone them but order new ones and replace ASAP... Peace of mind is a better way to boat.

Some people have had luck with spraying them with Dolph's Red Insulator paint and then sanding the Plastic and JB or epoxying them . silicone is only tempory too find out if the will work when warm or hot .

Re: Crack in my coil packs....? will this affect them working?

Thanks for all the input, ill explain that I just bought this boat and im basically trying to test run without dumping extra money into it.
I wont be far from shore in a well populated area.

After I get it running and test it on water ill replace both coils asap.
My problem is I cant find a coil for this motor, well I found one in west marine catalog, but it looks totally different.
My coil is long and round, this other one is square...?
Is this a aftermarket replacement for the round ones?
Help! Im stumped....
