Crack in transom

All-

I just bought a 1985 Ebbtide Dynatrak. The previous owner didn't have the boat on the trailer fully and accidently backed it into a post. Supposedly the boat hasn't been in the water since, but it has just been winter time and I'm sure that some moisture made it in. I did the scredriver test (knocked on the transom to hear the difference in sounds) and the line drawn on the picture is where I'm sure the fiberglass has come off of the wood transom.

The crack is about 5 inches long and the area that definitly need to be replaced is about a 6 inch square. By the way, this crack is on the starboard side, right at the base of the transom and the bottom of the boat.

If I cut away the fiberglass (I was planning on cutting at least a 12 inch square on the transom) and the wood looks good, can I give it some time to dry and then simply re-fiberglass?

I checked the rest of the transom and it all looks like it's in good shape. No movement at all when I stand on the motor to try and induce stress cracks to appear. No other stress cracks anywhere in the transom that I can see.

I don't want to have to replace the entire transom if it's not needed, but also don't want to put a band aid on a cancer.

I am friends with the previous owners and they have said that if this damage is too much for me to fix, that they would return all my money and take the boat back.

Is my suggestion an option, or does a crack in the fiberglass mean that the entire transom should be replaced?

Thanks for any help you all can give.

Re: Crack in transom

I forgot to mention that this is the major issue with the boat...the rest are cosmetic and relatively easy fixes. I will inclue additional pictures of the boat and the entire restoration if this crack is fixable. I just didn't want to distract everyone with pictures of the whole boat since I know how my mind wanders when I see a potential rebuilt/resto project.
