I'm new to working on boats. I was given a 1989 Searay with 3.0L/130 (181 cid) motor. When I received it last fall, it would not crank, so over the winter I rebuilt the carb. This past weekend I finally got it all back together with fresh gas and managed to get the boat cranked. Here is a link to it running. Unfortunately, when I looked in the engine compartment I saw water. Here are a couple of links showing the water leak (link1 and link2). I can't see exactly where the water is coming from, but is there a hose or something that is fixable back there that might be leaking. The leaks seems to be behind the distributor. I'm hoping so and that it is not a cracked block.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... My best Guess is, it froze with water in the block, which pushed out the core plug, behind the flywheel,.....

Ya gotta pull the drive, then the motor, then the flywheel, to replace the brass core plug,....

Yep, you need to yank that engine and inspect it closely. What are your compression numbers?

Thanks everyone for the quick reply.

I checked the oil and it looks nice and clear.............no brown, milky look. I'm not sure about compression. I do not have the tool to measure compression, but will try and get one.

My Dad and I are thinking about taking this on as a fun project but considering it is a 26 year old boat we need to check a few other things to make sure it's worth the effort. The boat was given to me by a family member (their kids were grown and they no longer used it) and physically it is in very good shape. It is a 1989 Searay 160. It had sat unused for a couple of years and when I got it last fall it would turn over but not crank. All I've done so far is rebuild the carburetor (kit from Mikes Carburetor and followed his youtube video). After the rebuild, I was surprised how easily it cranked. Considering I only have about $50 invested in the boat, it may be worth my time and effort to keep working on it.

Does anyone know of a step by step guide or youtube video to pulling a 3.0L engine?

I thought I should come back and update this thread. It turns out the freeze plug behind the flywheel was out plus the engine block was cracked. I found a local boat mechanic whose prices was just too reasonable to fix the engine rather than try it myself. He replaced the freeze plugs and welded the crack and the engine is running fine. I've had it out twice now and the oil looks a nice golden, clear color. Now I can move and fix some of the other issues.
