So Ive been seraching around everywhere, and all the results i get are about people already knowing about their engine blocks being cracked. If I just bought a boat, how can I tell if the block is cracked? Will I still have good compression? I read something about running the motor and checking to see if the oil is cloudy or something. Can someone give me assitance with doing a check to see if I have a cracked block. I just did a compression test, I still need to change the water pump, clean carbs, and change gas before i think she will start up. Thanks!

You posted in the outboard motor forum . . . so are we talking about an outboard? If so, all the cracked block stuff does not apply . . . it is more the issue with I/O's.

Let us know the specifics, we don't read minds all that well.

Re: Cracked block check!

Outboard blocks do crack. More often they get corrosion around the cylinder heads or exhaust water jackets and they can leave a milky oil in a 4 stroke outboard. The valve seats are also noted for cracking in 4 stroke outboards. If it is a 4 stroke outboard, forget the compression check and do a leak down check, it is much more accurate.

A model # sure would help if you want any answers.

Re: Cracked block check!

Sorry, I didnt know model mattered, just figured overall all outboards might have the same checks. Theres no reason for me to suspect any issues except the deal I got on the package off craigslist. Its an 1989 Evinrude 20HP E20CRLCEM. Compression is: 1 - 117 2 -119. . . thats the only check so far, Im changing the pump and gear oil this weekend so I can see if I can get her to run. The previous owner said he rarely used it after he bought it last year thats why he wanted to get rid of it. Found out last night when it rained theres a slight crack in the hull and now im wondering if he even had it out. Soi before throwing all this money into getting the motor running (for all i know she will start right up) I just wanted to check engine block.

Compression is fine. Very unlikely there are any cracks in the block.
