I have cracked the hull on my offshore. do you think its possible to grind through the cracked area, and stop short of the hulls outer finish and then replace cracked glass? what should thefiberglass that i want to tie to look like? What is the best resin? Should i contact grady and have them match my resin with theirs? Any info would help. thanks

Re: Cracked hull

The best repairs are done from the inside. Grind the crack until you hit solid glass and you "feather" it well. Also sand the glass around the feathered area for 6 inches or so. Now wipe entire sanded area with acetone. Now using epoxy resin, saturate and lay a small strip of glass cloth over the crack, follow with a slightly wider and longer saturated strip of cloth. Continue until you have filled in the feathered area. Now saturate and lay at least two layers of heavy glass roving. This roving should cover the entire sanded area. Fill the weave with epoxy and let the entire patch harden.

OK, now fill the crack on the outside with some Marine surfacing (epoxy or poly) putty tinted to match the hull. Sand it smooth, and you are done

Epoxy kicks butt, stronger than glass, and adheres better.

I just got over digging out old rotten stringers, and epoxy in new ones. I used MAS, with slow 5 hour kick, and it was easier than I expected.

Re: Cracked hull

Miles, Your hull is likely polyester resin and glass. I specified epoxy since you need a high strength, structural repair. With the proper preparation, poly will stick to epoxy and vice versa, quite well, however, I think epoxy is best for your repair. If the repaired area was high up the sides or on the gunwales or deck, poly would have been the choice, due to its lower cost.

Re: Cracked hull

Ill have to cut open the cabin floor to get a good picture. Looking at it closer, I believe someone tried to repair it from the outside. I can a see a slight bulge. In the middle of that bulge is a gash 8" long less than a quater inch wide. Working on pictures. thanks for help.
