Hit an underground object and ended up cracking the lower unit. Well hey I am guessing it might have been a rock....Also tore up the propellar and lost reverse in the process. One exsensive rock I say. Replaced the prop and have yet to pull the lower unit to check the shift rod but oil is leaking from a crack. Can anyone suggest on how to fix that??

Re: Cracked Lower Unit

My neighbor did similar damage hitting an object which resulted in a small dent (nickel sized) and slight puncture. His still ran OK but when checked found that the prop shaft was bent. Yours sounds more serious since a gear is ground up. Sounds like a rebuild, perhaps with a new or used lower case, may be in order. It can also be welded or sealed (JB Weld for instance) much depends on severity.

I'd get another lower on ebay.. change the water pump, and get back in the water.

-- Joe
