cracking on transom top

I have a 1974 16 foot baja speedboat with a '99 Johnson recently put on it. When I took it out the other day I noticed wide cracking on the top of the engine on each side of the transom. when I shake the engine up nad down with my hands the crack flexes a little and the back area of the boat moves a little on one side. Am I in trouble? Thanks

Weakness is not self-curing.<br /><br />If there's cracks and flex there's weakness. It can only get worse.

Today I drilled a few small holes in various spots on the inside of the transom. What came out was not black, it was kind of a light brown. what came out did feel a little softthough. But if I bang on the base and near the engine on the transom it seems solid. Any more advise?

Trim the motor down to vertical, stand on the antiventilation plate and bounce up and down. If the transom is strong, it shouldn't flex. If it does...
