Ice pick so as to not make a big hole.

Push wit firm pressure to see if its rotten. if it goes in to easy you have rot.

Re: cracks

You know, anthony, as I see more and more of your boat from your posts, I'm thinking that it's going to need an enormous amount of work, time, and money to get to even be safe, much less look good.

I say this because even though I bought a boat costing a bit more ($1300 for a 22 footer) I am still ending up spending months rebuilding it. It'll be nice when it's done, and just what I want in a boat right now, but the staggering amount of work needed almost made me give up on it completely.. I came here to iboats to get a swift kick in the butt to get me moving on it.

Given the amount you'll have to spend in money and time to fix this boat, are you sure you don't want to start with something in a bit better condition? I know I would have if I'd had any idea what I was starting (more to the point, if I'd paid attention to the people telling me "my" boat was in sad shape).

The folks here are great sources of info on where to get cheap boats, and I would think they'd be able to help you find a near free fiberglass boat in good shape that you can use as a better starting point.

It's up to you, of course, I just don't want someone else to give up on a great thing like I almost did because it's taking too long or because you found something else that needs fixing.

Add up the cash you'll spend to make this boat work - be honest, and I bet you'll find there are better boats cheaper, that will get you on the water faster.

Re: cracks

Anthony,

A few people have suggested that you abandone your project. I agree with erikgreen. Your boat needs an incredible amount of work. After it is all fixed up you would have spent many $$$ on a boat that still is not worth much. Buy a decent fibreglass boat and start on that. It will be cheaper in the long run. Also by your questions, it sounds like your experience is limited and you may want to take on an easier task. I know if someone gave my your boat for free, I would not take it because I don't have the experience fixing those types of boats and it would cost many $$$.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: cracks

OK, i read all his post, sometimes relunctatly, he gets off track and way ahead of himself. as a matter of fact, haven't seen a picture of anything he's done. But, the boat has been in his family, and i understand the desire to want to restore it. to me it looks like a home built wooden, as he calls it a 1/2 cab, someone did a glass job on it. which imho, is bad. they should have sealed it and painted it. it has tons, and tons of deferred maintainance. but is not impossible.

even for me who has spent his life building custom homes, and office building it would be a challenge. i've built a couple of boats from scratch. rather do that than tear into an old one.

that said my Bro in law, are looking for a wooden 50' Chris craft to restore.

Re: cracks

i went out with a big nal and pushed and poked all around the only places it would go in were where i could see some rot and a few little bits of soft wood that look easy to replace the worst place looks to be the transom which i was going to do now but will have to wait for 6 more weeks the rest of the hull looked pretty good apart from a bit where deck meets hull which looks like it can be cut and glassed i also went around pushing on the hull very hard with my hand and would not flex which looks like it might be a good thing

oh and btw i was scraping some of the flaky paint off on the outside and there is some kinda really thick paint stuff bout 2mm thick

Re: cracks

if you click on the 3rd and 4th pictures you can see it the white stuff under peeling paint but the white stuff is on there good its covering the whole hull there shouldnt be any seams along it because its plywood sheeted so there are no seams running along the hull. there is also none of this on the transom because its fibre glass covered same as deck

Re: cracks

its apears the white stuff is just fibreglass but what is confusing me is that they cleaned up the fibreglass on the hull and made it smooth and the deck looks like **** not sanded you can see the lumpy fibre matting under it maybe they did this for a grippy deck i do not know
