Is it acceptable to clean and prepare the crank case flange with alcohol prior to applying the anerobic gasket maker? Or is the OMC Safety Solvent a MUST USE product? Thanks.................... ALAN

Those surface's have to be absolutely clean, alcohol has little, or no effect. Make sure your hand's are also clean before you apply the dealer.

Acetone is a good cleaner and available at most hardware/building supply stores.

Re: Crank case flange preperation?

Thanks Walker and R.Johnson. I have a couple more concerns to add also, if you gentlemen don't mind.........

1. Should I apply the Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker to the entire flat area and NOT just the outside peremeter? The OEM Service Manual doesn't really go into good detail on how this is supposed to be applied, although it does state to add a little extra to the outside edges. Therefor, I am assuming the entire flat area is to recieve the gasket maker, but I'm not 100 percent certain on this.

2. The service manual also states to apply the sealant 1/4 inch away from the "labyrinth seals". This leads me to my next queston......... What is a labyrinth seal? What, exactly, are they referring to?

3. In my discussions with Dhadley, I have learned he spreads the sealant with his finger instead of leaving just a bead around the flange. How thick, or thin, of a coating am I looking for?

Thanks a bunch guys!!!!!!!!.........................ALAN

Re: Crank case flange preperation?

Anyone? I really need to seal the deal here. Just finished torquing the rod caps to 30 ft/lbs as per the service manuals specs. I picked up some Acetone Cleaner this morning and am ready to get this thing sealed. Btw, the can says this stuff is for fiberglass and fiberglass jelly? ............... ALAN

Loc-Tite make's a Gel-Seal remover. and BRP sell's one. Acetone is not the best option in this case. The flange's have to be clean for a proper seal. The gel-coat is applied to the entire surface with an even film. The labyrinth seal, is the brass seal's around the crank bearing's with groove's. You don't want gel-seal in these groove's.
