Been working on the engine (350 merc) and was careful to tape all the openings as I went. Got it all back together and tried to start it with carb open (no spark arrestor / vent tubes into the rocker arm covers). Noticed oil coming out of the dip tube, obviously something was wrong, and stopped. Realized I didn't remove the tape covering the oil vent tube holes on the cover. OK? Or did that mess something up? Cranked it over twice for 5 - 10 seconds before stopping after seeing the oil come out of the dip stick tube. Thanks in advance.

DID you have water hooked to engine. If so it sounds like you have a cracked block filling pan with water.
