I have a 88 mer 35hp outboard. The cranking motor/starter some times decides
it won't raise to engage the fly wheel. I give it a couple of hits then it works. What is the best way to fix this. Replace the cranking motor or pull it and take it apart? The seloc said it is a gummy bendex drive but doesn't explain beyond that. Any ideas?

Re: cranking motor help

First, check out the free and easy possibilities.

1. Manually move the Bendix gear up and down the shaft while spraying the shaft with WD-40. When it moves easily wipe the shaft clean and give it a thin coat of light oil, like sewing machine oil.

2. Remove both battery cables (both ends) and carefully inspect for weak spots. Carefully clean all connections and reinstall.

If those are no help test the solenoid. It may not be making good contact every time.

Last resort is the starter motor. Clean and reseat the brushes on a clean commutator.

Remember that most starters that get replaced are not bad but are getting poor connections to the battery through those big wires and the solenoid.

Yes, something that simple is one of the most common troubles and causes an awful lot of fixing what ain't broke.

I'm not sure if you can replace the bendix and fix this problem. You may have to replace the starter. Normally this problem could result in worn or damaged teeth not engaging properly and could damage your flywheel.
