cranking question

I have a new marine statring battery for a 15 electric start Evinrude that seems to lose cranking power after about 10 secs of cranking. I've checked all connections and they seem tight, yet the motor slows to a slow crank after only a short time. Any ideas what to check, I took the battery back and had it load tested and it checked ok. Charges up fine and holds good charge. I'm puzzled....

Re: cranking question

I suspect diminished battery capacity. The battery can dump the amps needed, but only for as long as the battery's available capacity. Take the battery out of your car and try it.

Re: cranking question

I'm leaning toward the starter going out. That's if the engine is turning freely otherwise. 10 Seconds is way to short for a good or even partially good battery to crank that small motor. If you have access to an ampmeter, hook it up inline with the starter and see what it draws. Bet it's too much...

I would say its the starter also, you have the classic symptoms of a bad one.

Hi, Knobby.

My guess is wiring.

Go to the FAQ section and follow the troubleshooting for slow/no starter operation.

Moving this to General Outboard.

Re: cranking question

Either your brushes in the starter or the armature is dragging against the fields,
Next time you try to start and this condition occurs just put you hand on the side of the starter and if its hot to the touch then rebuild it or replace

Hey, thanks gentlemen for your ideas/advise. Thw starter wasn't heating up, the amp draw was low, so JB, I replaced the wiring and she's spinning like a Singer. You're still the man.
Knob
