Cranking resistance since Ran out of Gas

I have been working on my 1978 evenridue 140hp. I finally had it running like a champ. My last trip I was running almost full speed and ran out of gas. Ever since then cracking has been very sluggish. I removed the spark plugs and manually turned the flywheel and could tell there is resistance. I was going to pull the heads off this week and check the pistons and rings, but didn't know if anyone had other suggestions.

No Gas= NO OIL.
Could have galled a bearing/Journal.

Is that a 2 stroke or 4 stroke model? If it is a 2 stroke I would remove the plugs and push the piston all the way to the bottom of the bore. Spray a good quality lubricant in the cylinders and try turning it over by hand and see if that makes a difference. If it is a 4 stroke I don't have any ideas. Either way more information would be good.

I'm not one of the sites experts, but I'd seriously consider checking the compression before pulling the heads (just to see if you have any significant loss). Compression would preferrably be 90+ psi and should not vary much (if any at all) between cyl.

Do you have consistent resistence through the whole engine revolution (with plugs removed) or does it get tight and then loosen up again?

I'd say cranking manually with sp out there is tension on about 3/4 of the turn and 1/4 is loose.

I don't have any good news, running an engine out of gas while under load is VERY BAD. As the fuel levels starts getting low in the carbs the combustion temps start climbing, skyrocketing the leaner it gets, until the pistons melt.

Go ahead and check compression but when you do pull the heads I expect you will find the upper cylinders started to burn, you can expect to replace at least those pistons during your rebuild.

EVERYONE needs to take this expensive lesson to heart.

ALWAYS ensure you have MORE THAN enough fuel to be sure that you do NOT run out underway.

Running out of fuel is not a good thing for your motor's health !!!!
No fuel = no lubrication !!!!
