65 hspr. Evinrude-been through the mill with this engine. Have come to the conclusion that the problem exist in the control box, where the ignition switch and the safety switches are. The wiring on the two small bolts on the solonoid goes to each one of these in the box. The safety switch has about five wires going to it. Is there a way to check these two switces out.
Thanks,
Skip

Whats the year Ship? Couple things to try.

If the engine has a large black or red connection plug, rig a spark tester and see if ya' got spark. If not, disconnect the large plug and try the spark test again. If you have spark, the trouble likely is in the ign. sw or safety switch.

year is 1972 for the evinrude. Have spark. How do you determine whether the problem is in the ignition switch or the safety switch.
Thanks
Skip

It's like OBJ said....

The safety switch kills spark to the motor, same as turning the ignition switch to the "Off" position.

If you really want to test them. Check for spark with the safety switch in "Run" position, then check for spark in "Kill" position.

The experts will tell you, if you have good blue spark, the problem lies elsewhere.

Squirt a little pre-mix in the carbs and see if she'll fire a little. There is a great article in the FAQ section about "Motor won't start".

Don't understand what your saying abuot the "run" and "kill" positions. There's nothing inscribed on the safety switch. I'm not the sharpest. Could you be more explici t as to how to put it in the run or kill position. Sure there's power to the solonoid, and it cranks, so I assumed the red connector was okay. It has about 15 male and female connectors inside. Or am I working with the wrong part of the engine. Thanks,
Skip

Re: Cranks-doesn't start

When you say you have spark are you talking about to the plugs? If you have spark to the plugs then it is fuel problem unless your safety switch is killing it. In the FAQ section there are several threads that tell what each of these wires goes to. I had to buy an ignition switch this summer and it was only about 20.00. I can't imagine the safety switch (which I bypassed)is much more than 10.00. That would definitely elimate the guesswork there.

Skip,
OMC Run is an open circut. Off or kill grounds out the spark like a weed eater or mower. This is backwards of automotive. This is why disconecting the big plug is a good test.

Mac

Re: Cranks-doesn't start

Is kill the key to the ignition that we turn off? What is the big plug? Is that the one with all the connectors in it? Can I bypass the safety switch? How? That way the problem could be isolated. Fireman 57, the safety switch cost about $55.oo, and doesn't look anything like the one in the boat with regard to wiring, opening up a whole new can of worms.
Thanks,
Skip

The off position (Remove key walk to the house) is the Kill or ground out spark position.

I am not an expert on your particular motor but, the big connector can be found by following all the wires in to the front of the motor. It is the disconnect for all the electrics if you wanted to remove the motor this will bypass everything other than the juice to the starter. Jump the starter solenoid and check spark. Do an Iboats search on this to find the proper technique.

Mac
