i am trying to reinstall the crankshaft on my '79 rude 85h and cant seem to get the dowel pin in the block aligned with the hole in the main bearing. is there any easy method to doing this? or is it just a matter of shifting it around until it finally drops in? been tearing my hair out for 2 hours trying to get it lined up. any help would be great.

other than making sur you have the bearing shell oriented its a mater of playing till it drops. the shell will go on with the hole offeset up or down but will only drop in the correct position.
DO NOT assemble the cover until your sure the dowl is in the hole or it WILL destroy the crank.
I typically install the piston and rods and then the heads and flip the motor so the crank is facing up and install the crank, then slip the endcaps on and finger tighten some bolts to hold the caps in place, its also a good time to start the lower bearing retainer bolts, then you can carefully draw the rods onto the trhrows.
but check the center main shell and insure you have the hole oriented up or down as required.

If before you install the bearing on crank. You lay it flat, and put a mark, directly opposite the hole for the pin. Its easy to get it on. You can tell if its seated properly ,by gently pushing on each end of crank . If it moves even slightly, up/down ,try again.
I noticed in my clymers manual , that they said to have the narrow end ,( referring to stripe in bearing) to the bottom . This was wrong , at least for the bearing I had. If I did it this way , the oil hole didnt line up. Neither did the bearing in general it was hanging off one side. Thats why a OEM manual is the best.
As long as you have it the correct way , the mark will make it very easy.
I for got , a permanent marker works great to mark the bearing.

Good-Luck,
KYHunter
