Re: Crankshaft Seal Rings Evinrude V4 1984 100hp
There are four (4) different ring sizes. # 1 has 1 stripe, 2 has 2 stripes, and so on. Factory recommendations are that a measurement of .0015" should exist between the side of the ring and the crankshaft slot. However OMC has always provided an alternative procedure as follows.
Starting with the largest size ring (#4), rotate/roll the ring in the slot all the way around the slot. If too tight, try the next smaller size (#3) and so on down the size line. When you find a ring that fits smoothly all the way around the crankshaft slot, the proper size to use is the next smaller size.
Unfortunately, one must possess all four sizes of the rings in order to do this procedure.
Frankly, for what it's worth, in all of my 30+ years of working with OMC, I have yet to install any size crankshaft ring but the first size.
