Hi....

Geo-Caching sounds like it could be fun. Anyone care to outline the basics for me?

(1) I have an Android Smart-phone with GPS. Will that be OK or are there advantages to a stand-alone unit of some type. For the Android; what are some good aps?

(2) What forums and/or websites are good to check out?

(3) Any tips for getting it interesting for kids?

(4) What other questions should I be asking? (Feel free to provide the answers as well....:)

I did this a few years ago. I think geocaching.com is the main site.

I always brought my kids and they loved the hunt. I had to have a prehunt briefing with them because once they found the cache it was like vultures tearing into it. I would get a bunch of stuff from the dollar store to leave n the caches.

I always used a handheld gps, not sure how the phone would work, but you could give it a try.

Re: Crash Course on Geo-Caching

geocaching.com is probably the best site on the net as Roger said.

I'm not sure how accurate the SmartPhone GPS units are - you want something that will get you within at least 30 ft. of the target accurately. My Garmin Nuvi isn't as good for geocaching as my friend's eTrex - though we've found several caches with the Nuvi.

My kids have always enjoyed the hunt (we do it at least once or twice per year). Make sure you search for some larger caches first, and take some of the information from the website on that particular cache with you (hints, details, etc.). Some of the large caches are hard enough to find themselves, but some of the micro-caches can be real boogers.
