Any thoughts as to whether or not one could purchase a silver&black glitter from a craft store and mix in a clear gel coat and apply to my faded metal flake. JUst a thought

Re: Crazy of Not ?

As far as I know the metal flake used in auto painting is of a different material designed to hold up under harsher conditions than that used in hobby and craft projects. UV rays and the solvents I am afraid would not be so kind to the craft store metal flake.

I am not a painter be profession but have in the very distant past done my share of airbrush work on motorcycles and helmets.

I just purchased it through auto paint supply stores and it is not that expensive. Contact a competent painter in your area and they can supply you with the needed information concerning prices.

Re: Crazy of Not ?

you might want to rethink the whole metal flake idea.

speaking from a repair position only, metal flake is really hard to repair and make it look good.

some of the new paints on the market are fantasitc at putting a really deep shine on a boat. better than a metal flake

Re: Crazy of Not ?

metal flake oxidizes faster than regular paint, as the reflection causes addition oxidation

Re: Crazy of Not ?

Back in the 70's, my dad let me paint my car with metalflake in his body shop. I just didn't like that the grill would be the same color. Didn't want to buy the whole amount needed, and I got the same idea about glitter. I sprayed the grill down with a good wet coat of clear. Then I had the glitter in a salt shaker with large holes. Gave the grill a good thourogh coat of gold glitter. Oh boy how it sparkled. However it was just as rough as 36 grit sandpaper. Okay, I said, just spray several coats of clear on it and it will be okay. 20 coats later, it looked like I hadn't put any clear on it. Then I thought of sanding it,,,,,,wrong, as soon as I started sanding it smooth, the gold glitter started turning silver. I ended up washing off the mess and painted it flat black with a gold penstripe around it.

That is my experience with it. You can learn from it, or try it yourself,,,,,,but you'll have the same results.....A mess plus the waste of time. Good Luck
