on my 16'ss i have a 50hp evinrude '74 model with the large lower unit, 2 cylinder.....heres whats happening

about every other time i take her out, she will just barely plane, and i dont think its all the way up even, and sounds like she is muffled if that makes sence......i can run her for a few like that.....stop and hang out a bit, and the next time i take of she runs like normal, not a speed demon by any way shape or form, but she gets up and runs smooth. and also, i think the idle is too low, she wont stay running when i go into gear, im positive its from a too low idle, she runs slow even in neutral........is there a way to adjust the idle without going into the control box ?

best i can tell from the barely readable tag is she max's out at 85hp, im thinking of buying myself a new 75hp e-tec for xmas....would that be enough to really make the ol' girl scoot, or should i think about a 90hp ? would going that 5hp over with a modern powerplant be too much ?

Re: crazy throttle response

You need to do a health check on your motor before adjusting anything.

Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Spark plug condition

Re: crazy throttle response

i believe that the 1974 50hp engines had a automatic choke that comes from the exhaust cover.
there is a temp switch that activates the choke.
that might be your problem if everything else is good.
